With deep sorrow and emotion, the colleagues of the University of Naples ‘Federico II’ and the Institute of Biosciences and Bioresources of the National Research Council of Italy mourns the sudden and abrupt passing of Giuseppe Perugino at the age of only 52. After a successful career as Group Leader in the CNR, Pino, as all his colleagues and friends called him, was Associate Professor of Biochemistry in the Dept. of Biology of the University of Naples ‘Federico II’. Pino’s career has been entirely dedicated to the study of extremophiles focused on carbohydrate-modifying enzymes and, more recently, on enzymes involved in genome stability that repair DNA damage caused by alkylating agents. Pino participated to most Extremophiles Congresses and he was among the Organizers of the 12th International Congress of Extremophiles in 2018 in Ischia. He was an invited speaker in 2022 and he planned to present a poster in Loutrakis in 2024. His passion for teaching and his sympathetic and generous character made him beloved by students, collaborators and colleagues. His spirit, his communication skills, his acumen, his kindness and his strength are deeply missed by all.
